Peru - The Pilot

In a village high in the Andes mountains, children as young as six years old wake up before dawn to begin an incredible twenty-four mile round-trip journey on foot. Children make this un-chaperoned trip five times a week, for one purpose — to go to school.

The Imagine This! team, including creator/host Eion Bailey, author/environmentalist Aron Ralston, engineers Adrian Westaway and Ben Storan, performer Dingo, and artists Raewyn and JOYForce, have set out to transform both the local school and the children’s lives. Adrian, Ben, Dingo and Raewyn have come up with a plan to revitalize the school’s playground with brightly colored jungle-gyms, toys, and murals that build upon the folklore of the people of Peru.

Meanwhile, Aron has enlisted the help of the Los Angeles-based Lovecraft Biofuels to convert a bus into a bio-diesel vehicle that will eliminate the students’ seven-hour daily walk. JOYForce, a sculptor, has also set out to create an original work to be given to the village.

Hindered by unpredictable rain storms, a language barrier, and limited resources, the team has one week to change the lives of the children of this small mountain community. As the projects come together with only seconds to spare, cameras capture the jubilation of the children as they discover their newfound oasis, and the vehicle that will transport them to school each day!
